raincitygirl, you may wish to consider Terra Mare Resort/Hotel in Lixouri, as your base of operations if you indeed try Cephalonia. In late May/early June would be the best time weather-wise, and the room prices in the 125-bed resort (set in an orange/grapefruit grove, with an Olympic size pool) should be around $35/night CDN! It's also pretty central (20 minutes by ferry across the harbour from the capital - Argostoli). You'd also want to include Sami in your places to visit, and the Melissani Grotto, Drogarati Caves, and Bavarian Stable (for some horseback riding) - which are all nearby. I'll be quiet now.... Thanks for adding to the conversations today.

Hi neighbour. I'm in Nova Scotia. In 1970 I was at Bishop's University, and spent that summer working in Quebec City. My father was an electrician on the CNR, so I had a railway pass and travelled through a lot of Canada around that time. I didn't cross the Atlantic until 1977, when my late wife and I visited the UK. Or was it 1976?

Thank you for your reply/comments AnselmAdorne. We've finally got the PEI ferry working again, if you'd like to cross this body of water. It certainly sounds like your trip to the UK was memorable, for a lot of reasons. I grew up in Saint John, NB, and my dad was a short haul truck driver, so my travels in Europe were primarily "by my thumb". Regardless, it's a long time ago now.

Hitchhiking in Greece in 1970

I would like to thank all those who responded to my Forum Posts. It's been a long time since I revisited my travels in the summer of 1970, but those reminiscences seem to still put a smile on my face, and I wouldn't trade them in for the world. Again, thanks to all who helped me indulge in the recollection of those past events.

Sidari in Corfu 1973

You have caused me to reminisce about a long time ago. Sidari in Corfu summer in 1973. Stayed for a few weeks sleeping in an olive grove. The best of times. Great people who stayed for a lengthy period. We swore to meet again in 50 years but of course it didn’t happen. No doubt Sidari is unrecognizable now. Is that a tear in my eye?

Great to hear from a fellow Sidarian - despite it being 3 years removed. I am/was a Canadian, what nationality are/were you?

I divided my time between Kontokoli Beach (a Youth Hostel then; a condo/resort apparently now), and actually the slept on the beach to save a few Drachmas. Went to sleep counting falling stars from the Southern Cross constellation - not seen since in my hemisphere.

As for reunions, I played soccer/football against a fellow at the Youth Hostel who is one of my closest friends to this day (54 years), and we know the names of each other's children as well.

I look forward to hearing more about your adventures (or misadventures?) in future posts.
