Jordaan, Amsterdam

Last time I was in AMS, in '65, I paid $5 !! for a hotel. In '64 my husband was there with his mother; they stayed at the Amstel. We are going there in early March, and I am astounded at the price of rooms. Found the Hotel Brouwer in the Jordaan for €95, but it has few rooms- am waiting to hear about availability now. Is the Jordaan an acceptable place to stay ? Can anyone suggest another hotel there ? Thanks.

I have stayed at this hotel several times. Your one block from the tram, ditto a great market in the central square, within easy walking distance Central Station and shops, a bit old fashioned but the rooms are super clean, showers etc work, lifts to the upper floors, computer on hand with wifi, good solid dutch breakfast.

I used to live on 2e Lindendwarsstraat, just off Lindengracht: that's the heartland you might say. Brouwer is on Singel so not in Jordaan, which is the area of gardens (jardin, lots of French protestants, which became "Jordaan") from Prinsengracht to the west.

This is on Keizersgracht and nicer, though also more expensive

This is right in the Jordaan, but perhaps a bit too basic

The Brouwer is 3 minutes on foot from Singel 7, the address of the narrowest house - where they can't even set up the bed sideways... It's a well-known hoot but it's for real.

Lots and lots of B+Bs and hotels of all kinds along there, if the Brouwer is full you have lots of choices within walking distance, just look at Google map and zoom in.

Hello Bedar, you will find that a lot more has changed in Amsterdam since your last visit. It is still an amazing city though so I wish you a wonderful time. Do enjoy the Jordaan which has turned into an amazing place, filled with quaint shops and lovely restaurants.
My recommendation would be to find a nice bed and breakfast instead of a, much more impersonal and often more expensive, hotel. Try this link:

Veel plezier!

In 1972 I paid 1 guilder a night for a bed on a barge/hostel.

But these days one of the best ways to stay in Amsterdam is to use Priceline's Name Your Own Price. Go to the Netherlands forum at TripAdvisor.com and look up the threads "Bidding on a 4 star..." and "Bidding on a 5 star..." You'll see how to get a room for less than 100 euros a night for either class of hotel... a bargain these days!

We have stayed near the Jordaan several times, most hotels are more in the canal ring area than in the Jordaan. We also stayed at Mae's B&B one time and were quite satisfied with that as well. There is a hostel that is right in the Jordaan - The Shelter - and I think in the past few years they have added some individual rooms, not just dormitory. If you want to check that out, be sure to check out The Shelter Jordaan - the other Shelter is right in the middle of the red-light zone.
