The latest fashion report out of Paris is that the shoe of the summer is the coverse chuck taylor all stars. 1500 pairs in three months at one athletic shop. They are being sold at Colette's and the Galaries Lafayette.
Spotted wearing them is the Pr woman for Boujois cosmetics and former "Maryann", model, boutique owner, Ines de La Fressange.

Scarlett, I did see converse-style sneakers with a kitten heel in a shoe store window in France. I was tempted...but they were denim blue, not black...
(with all those icons, how come there isn't a shoe?)

When I was a kid, my mother used to haul us over to the Converse factory in Lawrence Massachusettes. That's what we all wore. Converse sneakers. They were good, cheap, and sturdy. Fashionable wasn't part of the equation!
I suppose this only goes to show that if you wait long enough, you eventually will be in style--but in my case, I was only thirty years too soon! (Not that you would catch me wearing them now, chic or not.)

Scarlett, not dead or alive. What was that song? "Put on your high-heeled sneakers..." 
dln, Converse got very stylish a few years back and I sort of liked the look, with a loose pair of linen jeans, but I don't find them very comfortable. But you are SOOO right about waiting long enough for fashion to come full cycle. The older I get, the more amusing it is.

dln, they are still made in Ma. tho not Lawrence and Nike is buying them out. I still wear them. I have a beige white trim pair I wear for biking. Retro is very big right now in Paris, I guess that's why the popularity, tho I read one piece saying because they are so comfortable(true)The ankle tops are the ones big in Paris worn with cargo pants.

Thanks Scarlett or anyone if they find it or has a copy. in the book, Topper goes into the store to buy sneakers, and George and Marion, who are ghosts (along with their dog), that only Topper can see. All are heavy martini drinkers and they follow him in and put on sneakers too. so when he leaves the store wearing his new purchase, people are astounded to see two more pairs behind him.

The Topper books are written by Thorne (not Thorton!!!) Smith and the title you're thinking about is "Topper Takes a Trip" and as you said, Cosmo goes off to the Riviera with his ghosts. If you visit www.alibris.com, you can pick yourself up a copy to enjoy once again!
I don't think there's anything better than finding a book that you remember from years ago. I've been looking for years for a children's book about Angela, a little dark-haired girl who had dozens and dozens of shoes. It wasn't written by anyone famous, so it's unlikely I'll find it. Lucky you to have Topper back!

Thanks dln. I didn't try Amazon, deliberstely because maybe someone wanted to sell their old copies. I read this book maybe 40 years ago, so there's the lapses or reasons why.
I will keep my open for Angela. I love second hand book shops. I recently picked up one of my old favorites but now it is reissued, Do you know Miss "Jasters Garden?'" It's about an English lady and a hedgehog. Years later, I had a relationship with one in Provence, The first one I had ever seen, and named him Pierre. I wrote about him here a few years ago.
