Joie de Feet

The latest fashion report out of Paris is that the shoe of the summer is the coverse chuck taylor all stars. 1500 pairs in three months at one athletic shop. They are being sold at Colette's and the Galaries Lafayette.
Spotted wearing them is the Pr woman for Boujois cosmetics and former "Maryann", model, boutique owner, Ines de La Fressange.

Gee,

What am I supposed to do with my Gucci flipflops?

cigalechanta Aug 16th, 2003 09:20 AM

are they my size?

Marilyn Aug 16th, 2003 09:26 AM

What a relief -- it was so difficult to walk on those cobblestones in my manolos.

Mariarosa Aug 16th, 2003 10:42 AM

uh, uh (sigh) ... These Converses are too flat for my feet and do not give me enough support (even with heel cups).

Scarlett Aug 16th, 2003 11:34 AM

Do they make them with small heels so I don't look so short?
Can I get them in black?
Ines de La Fresange is only 7 feet tall and weighs 80 lbs, what would she look bad in???

Marilyn Aug 16th, 2003 11:38 AM

Scarlett, I did see converse-style sneakers with a kitten heel in a shoe store window in France. I was tempted...but they were denim blue, not black...:d (with all those icons, how come there isn't a shoe?)

Scarlett Aug 16th, 2003 11:55 AM

Yes, Marilyn, I have seen the little lace up sneakers with kitten heels, would you be caught dead in them? LOL

Scarlett Aug 16th, 2003 11:56 AM

Aaarrgghh!! I cut myself off!
I was going to say, would you be caught dead in them? LOL ~ Not I! :D

dln Aug 16th, 2003 12:09 PM

When I was a kid, my mother used to haul us over to the Converse factory in Lawrence Massachusettes. That's what we all wore. Converse sneakers. They were good, cheap, and sturdy. Fashionable wasn't part of the equation!

I suppose this only goes to show that if you wait long enough, you eventually will be in style--but in my case, I was only thirty years too soon! (Not that you would catch me wearing them now, chic or not.)

Marilyn Aug 16th, 2003 12:34 PM

Scarlett, not dead or alive. What was that song? "Put on your high-heeled sneakers..." ((8)) ((8)) ((8))

dln, Converse got very stylish a few years back and I sort of liked the look, with a loose pair of linen jeans, but I don't find them very comfortable. But you are SOOO right about waiting long enough for fashion to come full cycle. The older I get, the more amusing it is.

dln Aug 16th, 2003 12:38 PM

Yes, I think it's pretty funny that my fourteen year old daughter wears peasant tops and bell-bottoms! Oh, excuse me, "flares."

Marilyn Aug 16th, 2003 12:48 PM

and low rise jeans = hip huggers

cigalechanta Aug 16th, 2003 01:45 PM

dln, they are still made in Ma. tho not Lawrence and Nike is buying them out. I still wear them. I have a beige white trim pair I wear for biking. Retro is very big right now in Paris, I guess that's why the popularity, tho I read one piece saying because they are so comfortable(true)The ankle tops are the ones big in Paris worn with cargo pants.
Ines is surprisingly not that tall. no where even near 6ft. I prefer Superga sneakers but no longer can find them here.If you wanmt to read something funny about sneakers, read Thorton Smith's," topper goes on Vacation
" He goes to Nice, and the book had me laughing out loud. I'd like to reread it. Anyone have a copy? I''ll buy it.

Scarlett Aug 16th, 2003 01:49 PM

Mimi, I like Supergas too!
I will keep my eye out for the book then send it on to you if I can find it :)

cigalechanta Aug 16th, 2003 02:09 PM

Thanks Scarlett or anyone if they find it or has a copy. in the book, Topper goes into the store to buy sneakers, and George and Marion, who are ghosts (along with their dog), that only Topper can see. All are heavy martini drinkers and they follow him in and put on sneakers too. so when he leaves the store wearing his new purchase, people are astounded to see two more pairs behind him.

dln Aug 16th, 2003 03:29 PM

Mimi, I found the book! Although I did think you were leading me on a wild goose chase. :S- The Topper books are written by Thorne (not Thorton!!!) Smith and the title you're thinking about is "Topper Takes a Trip" and as you said, Cosmo goes off to the Riviera with his ghosts. If you visit www.alibris.com, you can pick yourself up a copy to enjoy once again!

I don't think there's anything better than finding a book that you remember from years ago. I've been looking for years for a children's book about Angela, a little dark-haired girl who had dozens and dozens of shoes. It wasn't written by anyone famous, so it's unlikely I'll find it. Lucky you to have Topper back!

Scarlett Aug 16th, 2003 04:06 PM

Oh goodie, a treasure hunt, finding the book about Angela who loved shoes..my kind of friend :)

cigalechanta Aug 16th, 2003 04:09 PM

Thanks dln. I didn't try Amazon, deliberstely because maybe someone wanted to sell their old copies. I read this book maybe 40 years ago, so there's the lapses or reasons why.
I will keep my open for Angela. I love second hand book shops. I recently picked up one of my old favorites but now it is reissued, Do you know Miss "Jasters Garden?'" It's about an English lady and a hedgehog. Years later, I had a relationship with one in Provence, The first one I had ever seen, and named him Pierre. I wrote about him here a few years ago.
