Jewish Vienna

Hi. Does anyone have any info to share about the Jewish area in Vienna? I know there are two Jewish Museums; are they close to each other and which one should we choose if we can only do one. I am having some difficulty finding out information about the synagogue in Vienna. Is it located near the Jewish Museum and the Holocaust Memorial?

We would consider doing either a walking tour if the area or ysing a guide. Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

[About 500 meters from the Judenplatz Holocaust Memorial]

As to museums, I think it depends on what sort of exhibitions you want to see. You can check the current showings at the Jewish Museum of Vienna. We only visited the Museum at Judenplatz and enjoyed it very much because of the history and artifacts of Jews in Vienna in the Middle Ages and the excavated ruins of the ancient synagogue.

Look at Milk and Honey Tours. If you're not on a tour, you'd have to investigate access to the City Temple.

There are two Jewish Museums in Vienna; the Museum at Judenplatz (where the Holocaust Memorial is) and one on Dorotheegasse, a short walk away. Your ticket is valid for both. Both are in the Inner Stadt. The Stadttempel is the main synagogue of Vienna and is near the museums; touring is only available with a guide. http://www.jmw.at/en

The Second District (Leopoldstadt) was once the home of Vienna's largest Tempel, Leopoldstädter Tempel. This was destroyed during Kristallnacht; a memorial stands on the site.

I can not recommend any tours because I tour myself through Jewish history as I learn about it. If you have interest and inclination, there are numerous Stolpersteine around the city to be discovered, as well as the Jewish cemeteries at Seegass and the section at the Central Cemetery that can be visited.

I hope you find this helpful.

There is a wonderful BBC program that can viewed on YouTube called "Vienna: City of Dreams" that includes fascinating information on the multi-faceted aspects of Jewish history in Vienna. It's extremely well done and informative. The Jewish history of Vienna encompasses quite an array of famous folks -- revolutionaries, psychoanalysts, writers, musicians and the great chandelier makers of Vienna and the design of Wiener Werkstatte -- not to mention Sacher Torte

Also to four4travel, if you see this post, I mentioned you to another poster in another thread as someone who could perhaps help with sorting out where a family of 3 could stay in or quite near Vienna and elsewhere in Austria at bargain prices. The thread is called European Sampler: 4 weeks, 6 countries?

I contacted the synagogue yesterday and found out that tours are available at 11:30 and 2:00 daily and are 8 euros a person. You must bring photo id.
