Actually, the last time I vacationed with the family in the south of France (early-mid August, IIRC), about a decade ago, it was after the water temperature dropped, following a period of a couple days of heavy rain and cooler weather, that the jellyfish became a problem. When there was broth-temp-seawater (not very cooling/refreshing) jellyfish were nowhere to be found.

Thanks, Z! There appear to be many fashion outlets in or near Ancona. Years ago I struck up a conversation with an Alitalia crew member who told me that they had some of the "best shopping in Italy" at those outlets..

There is a great article about Jellyfish in this month's Smithsonian. I think this link to th eonline article should work:
http://www.smithsonianmag.com/specia...f-the-Sea.html
Basically, they are on the increase around the world. One solution is to eat them, at least the ones that are edible.
The article mentions some spots in the Mediterranean that have suffered infestations in recent years.
We swam off Cinque Terre a few weeks ago and it was lovely. We neither saw nor heard of any jellies in that area. I'm glad I didn' tsee the article until we returned from Italy.

we were kayaking in Mallorca 3-4 weeks ago and encountered jellyfish as well. It was fun from the kayak but not so much if we were swimming, that's for sure! Made my son want to head back right away.
