Interesting screen name to be asking this question. The news reports say they've been confiscated.

what's available on the street are bogus. You can buy them on Ebay. But why would you want one? you can almost see thru, they are large. A woman had one next to me at my table in St-Paul-de-Vence at breakfast. She was very tall so it looked ok on her, but it was for her carryall she said, to go to the pool.

True, they are quite large. I use mine when I have to cart about a lot of stuff. It is not a user-friendly bag as there are no easy access spaces. You have to unlatch both straps to get to your cellphone, wallet, etc. You can definately see through the white bags. Still, I get lots of comments when I use mine.
A man in Florence told me that people = Americans, buy dozens at a time to sell in the States.

It's a purse. It's made in the same style as the Hermes "Kelly" purse (think Grace Kelly), but it's made of opaque rubber. Earlier in this thread, someone posted a link to a NY Post article that explains the buzz behind these purses...very hot, hard to find items (except in Florence!).

Except on the streets of NYC also!
The guys are selling them on the corner of Madison Ave in the 80's every Sunday! I think they might be kind of "over" if you know what I mean? They are bright and summery colors and who carries a rubber bag in the winter?
Anyway-if you are here instead of Italy, you might want to look there

true, they did a story on them on the local (new york) nbc news yesterday morning. and they are more of a summer bag, but i still think they are cute, and they are waterproof, and i believe they're only about $50 or $60 in florence.
i saw some being sold in manhattan on the street this past weekend but they weren't the "real" thing (i.e, the ones subject to the injunction). they had a buckle instead of the signature kelly strap, and are same ones being sold at a store in l.a. called intuition, which has a website.

If I'm not mistaken, the ones that are not fake are thousands of dollars and the fakes are all alike. The best you can do is look online or wherever you might find knock-offs. My friends is olive green which might have taken her into the fall, it was a nice color for a rubber bag

*Excerpt from the NY Post in August*
_______________________________________
August 24, 2003 -- A translucent rubber satchel that comes in three sizes, varying neon colors and retails for between $120 and $240 has launched the most heated scandal of the summer.
Dangling from the grip of the city's status seekers, the European import led lawyers for French luxury goods maker Hermes to fire off claims that the rubber sack - nicknamed the Jelly Kelly - is an imitation of their leather Kelly (as in Grace) bag, which is priced at thousands of dollars.
The tempest has taken the bag off the shelves of at least one retailer in the Hamptons, but driven up demand. Now, labeled illegal contraband, it is the most coveted object in town.
One auctioneer on eBay calls it, "the most expensive bag made out of rubber" when its bidding price doubled to $240 after Hermes filed a federal lawsuit against a Southampton designer.

Sorry, my mistake, the real leathers are thousands, these are much more affordable if you can find them.
Good luck!

sorry, i didn't mean they were real hermes. obviously they are not. but the ones i saw in the street aren't really kelly copies, but jelly kelly copies, if you know what i mean.
i don't think the jelly kelly copies are banned. i think the reason that store in l.a. and other are allowed to sell them is because they are not really a copy of the kelly bag (read: buckle vs. strap).
the ones with the strap that were being imported from italy are the ones that were the subject of the injunction. they looked more like the real thing (except for the rubber part, of course!). see http://www.shopintuition.com/media/natenq.html
but then click on the actual ones they are selling--they're different.
i personally like the one with the strap, which is why i am going to hunt them down in italy. wish me luck! and thanks a million mizzeve for the info!
