Rennes is very attractive, especially if you can be there on market day. As I recall, it is reasonably level.
People are sometimes a bit sniffy about St Malo, but it was the first French town I stayed in and the narrow streets are quite attractive if you avoid the shops that are too touristy. However, you might find access to the walls difficult, and it is from the walls that you get the views along the coast.
Incidentally, St Malo was rebuilt after it had been virtually destroyed by allied bombing in the Second World War. That was a common experience for many of the northern French ports and towns, and it is worth remembering that the process of liberation, though welcomed, caused much death and destruction.

Pulled this up again for anyone interested. Am still "dealing with" Manoir de la Rance over a one night stay in May. They don't seem to have e-mail, so this has been going on for awhile.
However, liked the T.E. Lawrence quote. You never know what will make an English major go off and stay somewhere!
