Itinerary help: travelling from Rome to Sorrento with infant

My husband and I will be traveling to Italy for a week this July and we need some suggestions. We have a wedding to attend in Sorrento and are planning on flying into Rome (flight prices much better for us) and then renting a car, and driving to Sorrento. I should mention that we will be traveling with our infant daughter (will be 4 months in July), so we are trying to keep things simple. We have no specific agenda (other than to attend the wedding) and were thinking about stopping at a small town/village along the way for a few days of rest and relaxation.

It appears that the most direct driving route is inland on the A1. Does anyone have any suggestions of towns to visit along the way -- specifically we're looking for a small town within an hour of so of A1 between Rome and Sorrento?

Alternatively, we've visited the area once before and stayed in Praiano, a small village just beyond Sorrento. We're considering doing that again.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks!

Drive south from FCO for 2 hours to the lovely beach town of Sperlonga--do not even get onto A-1. From there decide about time in Naples--or not--but I would drop the car in Sorrento and not try to drive on the AC at all. Get a diver back to Naples and then a train to Rome for your return.

Hi BC - I'd second Bob's suggestion of Sperlonga.

Sperlonga is a nice half way point on your way to Sorrento and you might also consider Terracina which is a little closer to Rome than Sperlonga, and is a nice town with some good hotels along the beach, and lots of shops and restaurants. The drive is a pleasant one along the Via Appia which is an old Roman road, it's an easy drive. I agree with Bob about car travel on the Amalfi Coast (normally I love driving the AC, but I would not want to try it in July), but if you are not venturing any farther than Sorrento I would keep the car as I would not want to bring a four month old on the train.

Thanks for the suggestions - Sperlonga sounds like a great stop for us. Recommendations on hotel?
