I assume you will come into CT via La Spezia. You can return there and backtrack a little and have more options for car rentals. Or you can head north, maybe to Chiavari or Rapallo.
I recommend AutoEurope, a broker, based in Maine, that is highly regarded by many Fodorites. My own experience in Italy is that they often offer Hertz cars for less than Hertz direct, and their no deductible insurance is dramatically cheaper. I know they rent in La Spezia. If you head north, you will probably need to change trains eat least once to get to car rental locations.
La Spezia to Bolzano for example, will take half a day and that will leave you a day and a half to get a look at the Dolomites. Maybe one night Bolzano and a second night in Cortina d’Ampezzo allowing you one of the best drives in the mountains.
Here is a good link, with photos, of all the swimming options in CT: https://cinqueterre-travel.com/activ...door/swimming/

Hi! We were away at the cottage -- unplugged and reading Italy guidebooks Whitehall, thanks for the info! I think we will definitely go back to La Spezia to rent the car. Seems the most straight forward.
My kids were looking at CT this weekend and they both gave the opinion that they want to stay in Monterosso, because the beach looks so awesome (although my older one would/will love swimming off the rocks in Manarola, I suspect our younger one is too young and not a good enough swimmer). What are some honest opinions about Monterosso?
And if we want to do a boat tour in CT, any recommendations for companies that provide a good service?
