How much do you save going via PutinLand? and how much longer will it take? couple of hundred worthwhile perhaps - less than that IMO maybe not!

Sorry - but your time in Italy is really limited and IMHO it makes no sense to save a couple of hundred $ on transatlantic airfares going to a place you don't want to be - and then spend half the amount on additional train fares getting to and fro Milan and losing two days of your vacation getting to where you really want to be and then a day circling back again (you don;t want to be in rome and trying to get to a flight in Milan that day).

Before doing this run the exact numbers and figure out the time lost.

True, I need to find more information about trains from Milan to Venice and Rome to Venice. But I'm thinking that the nonstop flight would be much better, 8 hrs compared to the 15-24 hour aeroflot flights.

If your focus is food then the Piemonte would be perfect. It is much less crowded than Tuscany too.
We found it easy to park our car in a lot adjacent, short walking distance, to Siena.

We stayed at Fattoria Poggio Alloro http://fattoriapoggioalloro.com/ It was lovely, and it would have been nice to have stayed longer than one night.

Breakfast and a welcome glass of wine are included in the rate, and you can have lunch and dinner there too, if you like.
