Unless the USA gets a handle on COVID pretty soon, I think it's pretty certain the European Commission is going to vote next week to exclude Americans from traveling here, so I agree with lavandula. It remains to be seen, of course, but assuming they do vote to exclude Americans, and assuming the USA doesn't reverse its track record with the virus, the doors are likely to be shut well into the fall, perhaps beyond.

Lavandula, your last sentence puts it very well. We're all planning for the next trip, accepting that we don't know exactly when travel will be possible. Call it daydreaming, call it planning. Fodor's is one of the places I come to online that kind of keeps me in touch with France. There's so little activity on Fodor's France these days that I will read just about anything posted here, even about places we'll never get to. Someday we'll be back and I mean to be ready for that day. Actually, I'm already ready!

Sounds like a great trip. Looks like you have zeroed in on at least two options for the second half/return from Paris. Rome to the Amalfi Coast is fantastic and September would be the perfect time to avoid crowds and maximize weather. As cited earlier, this September may not be possible but maybe next May or the following September 2021. Not sure about the final Rome to Paris link but we did the Italy part of this trip recently covering Rome/Positano/Ravello/Capri and Sorrento. I've included details in a blog post https://travelfam.wordpress.com/category/italy-2017/
The other idea is flying Rome to Nice and enjoying time in the Nice/Villefranche/Antibes/Monaco area. Lots to do, nice beaches, sites and restaurants plus a super easy TGV train back up to Paris for your return. Please see details and info for a Paris/Avignon/Nice area trip in the following blog post https://travelfam.wordpress.com/category/france-2015/
