Planning an itinerary in Tuscany is a little bit like asking us to pick the curtains, wallpaper and place mats for your kitchen. I think that only you can do that.

but these might help:

March 31, 2002
Volterra's Past Speaks in Its Stones
By BARRY UNSWORTH

ANY visitor to Volterra will be struck by the starkness of the contrast between the town itself and the countryside surrounding it.

http://www.nytimes.com/2002/03/31/travel/VOLT.html

March 24, 2002
ITALY
Intrigued by the Etruscans
In museums and excavated sites, searching for traces of an ancient civilization.

http://www.latimes.com/travel/destinations/other/la-000021251mar24.story

For both web sites, you will have to register to read these articles, but on both, it's free.

Best wishes,

Rex
Hello Marla, You have many good options. I assume you are driving--that would be a big factor. Here is a rough start to a potential itinerary:
Land Milan--to the Lakes--3 nites
To the Ligurian coast--2 nites
To Tuscany--near Siena---4 nites
To Rome--drop car in Orvieto--4 nites

Hope this helps !
