Itinerary Advice

This is our first trip to Italy. Four of us traveling together. Would appreciate any comments/advice/critique on our plan.

Friday, 10/3 Arrive Rome 11am
Saturday, 10/4 Rome
Sunday, 10/5 Rome
Monday, 10/6 Rome
Tuesday, 10/7 Rome
Wednesday, 10/8 Rome-Assisi
Thursday, 10/9 Assisi-Siena
(From my research the best way to do the Rome-Assisi-Siena-Florence seems to be driving, I found good trains connections Rome-Assisi but not Assisi-Siena, any comments would be appreciated)
Friday, 10/10 Siena-Florence
Saturday, 10/11 Florence
Sunday, 10/12 Florence
Monday, 10/13 Florence-Venice(train)
Tuesday, 10/14 Venice
Wednesday, 10/15 Venice
Thursday, 10/16 Venice
Friday, 10/17 Home 14:00
Thanks for any input.

I like your open jaw plan and it seems as if you are allowing a nice amount of time in each place. Any special reason why you plan to sleep in Siena? You could day trip from Florence to Siena. Train connections for Assisi-Florence would be better. However the drive through Umbria and Tuscany would be a nice one.

ellenem-thanks for the reply. We decided to stay in Siena to enjoy the town after the day trippers have left. Understand that it gets quite crowded during the day.

I'd rent a car on your way out of Rome and do a night in Assisi (or get a car there if able), then stay 3 nights S of Siena and tour more hilltowns (Pienza, Montalcino...) including a trip to Siena. OR stay in Siena and day trip out w/your car. 2 nights in FLorence is enough in my opinion.

I agree with Ellen--do not stay in both Assisi and Siena--do one or both as day trips from Florence. If you decide to drive for your Tuscany/Umbria segment then add a day and make it a 3 day rental and see parts of south Tuscany.
