Itinerart Help - Apr 2006 - Venice - Sorrento - Rome

Our family of 4 (incl 2 teen boys) will be travelling to Italy April of 2006. I have booked my outgoing flights but can;t book my return until next week, so want to see how this itinerary looks before I book mt return tickets.

My husband and I have been to Venice and Rome before, but our boys have not.

We will do some museums, churches etc but not an overabundance of them. My younger son is very interested in the ruins like Pompei, the Forum etc.

Here is our tentative itinerary and I will have some questions at the end...

Apr 13 - Arrive Venice 9:30 am (this will be a low key day due to jetlag from NY)
Apr 14 - Venice
Apr 15 - Venice
Apr 16 - Leave Venice for Sorrento
Apr 17 - Sorrento/Pompei Excursion
Apr 18 - Leave Sorrento for Rome
Apr 19 - Rome
Apr 20 - Rome
Apr 21 - Rome
Apr 22 - Leave for NY

Does that sound like a reasonable itinerary without too much rushing around and packing and unpacking?

What is the best way to get from Venice to Sorrento? Train or plane? From Sorrento is Capri a nice place to visit in mid April?

Please comment - I am always open to suggestions.

(And I haven;t even begun to look at hotels/apartments yet)

Thanks.

Donna

Hi donna,

You are doing 2 nights Venice, 2 nights Sorrento. To me that is to much packing and unpacking.

Have you considered 5 days in Venice with a daytrip to Florence, fly to Naples on Alpieagles, bus from Naples airport to Sorrento, fly home from Naples?

Bus schedules at http://www.curreriviaggi.it/

Actually, donna has 3 nights in Venice. Since you haven't booked your return flight yet, why not go to Rome first, then Sorrento and fly home out of Naples so you don't have to backtrack to Rome?

Leaving from Naples was another thought - but the flights are at 6:30 in the morning and require long stops en route. That is just way to early to have to get up, out and to the airport.

From Rome there re 2 non-stops to JFK each day and I am hoping to get on one of those.

I will explore the back from Naples option thoough when I book them next week.

I just added another day to the trip - where best to put it?

Ira - I can deal with flying (barely) but hate takeoffs and landings so I prefer no stops which is why Rome would be better for me to fly home from.

Thanks

But again - ending in Sorrento would be nice after the faster pace of Rome.

I am flying on Delta miles so will have to see what they have available when I call later this week.

I guess that will be the deciding factor.
