Thanks Paul and Marighita! WE do plan on stopping in Oberamergau and Herrenchiemsee castle was on our list as well.

Paul I will look into getting the car earlier. I had planned on doing what you said about staying in Berchtesgaden for a few nights before to hit Salzburg and Berchtesgaden at the same time but I got lots of comments that made too much moving around. So it was a location I was thinking of dropping. My husband and I will do some talking this weekend and determine the best option for us. I like the idea of staying in Berchtesgaden. Thanks again for taking the time to give me your input.

I am always amused at how everybody loves to say "You are doing too much" when it comes from moving from one major place to another. Do YOU travel as fast or as slowly as everbody else? IMO what you may be trying to do is too much ON ANY ONE DAY once you GET there.

Now, a few practical questions:

you can do a trip to Salzburg from Munich..train tyime is 1.5 hours EACH way and Prien (for Herrenchiemsee) is right on the way BUT you cannot do both in one day IMO..so pick one or the other.

You do not need a car for the Eagle's Nest..you can geta tain to Berchtesgaden..the only thing a car will do is cos you money and perhaps get you to Berchtesgaden a little faster..and you still need a tour to see the whole thing (the bunkers included)

Where are you planning to return the car..in R-berg? You can get a train to there as well although a car might be a better option since you'd have to change trains in Steinach.

I thik your trip needs some more fine tuning obviously bu please remember that everyone here is basing their comments on what THEY have done in the past (and some of them probably haven't even DONE some of it).
