A couple at the wedding we attended in Rome were surrounded at the train station and the theives tried to grab the camera bag and her purse. The husband is an Officer in the Marine Corps and every inch of him looks it. They managed to hold onto all their belongings but it was a struggle. They were not distracted or stupid. It happens and can happen to anyone.

Returning from Naples on the train we had 2 different guys jump onto the train before it left the station and come to the door of our compartment as if scanning for something to grab, and then go quickly down and off the train. My husband was with me and we had our belongings close to us. I travel many times alone to the UK and France and feel safe with normal precautions. I decided then I would not be comfortable on a train/in a station alone in Italy.
