My husband and I just returned this week and would like to suggest that you might consider taking taxis in Rome rather than the subway if you're short on time and want to see as much as you can. We were there three days and saw lots of things for about $50 total in taxi fares. If you take the subway you still have an incredible amount of walking to do not to mention the time involved. Taxis are everywhere and we had really good luck.

Ask local shopkeepers where the locals eat--specify you do not want a tourist restaurant. If you ask the conceirge, you may or may not get good advice--they often have tie-ins. The only bad meals you could possibly have are the ones at places that cater to tourist groups, so be careful.
