Italy weather

dowling - you are on the right track with layers.
it could be very hot, or middling, or cool.
i would suggest sleeveless t-shirts or similar as a base layer, light shirts [that you can wear over the base] as a 2nd layer, and the odd cardigan as a third. all three could come into play if it was not particularly hot.
a light jacket/waterproof would be a good idea too - it could act to keep you warm on cooler evenings, even if it didn't rain.
have a great trip!

Here is Milan. I would expect nice weather---highs about 75 lows about 55---warmer at the CT.

I'm just organizing my wardrobe for Sept 8-Oct 6, Rome/Umbria/ CT/Bellagio. Layers is the way to go. I'm also taking a denim jacket as it was invaluable last Fall in SW France. Everything fits into a carryon.
You may need to wear the heaviest pieces on the plane, but usually that works fine.
