Italy travel in october

would you stay in Sienna, Monteriggioni,, Montepulciano, Montecino or Orvieto for 2 nights between Florence and Rome?
We have the 13th to the 15th in Florence and then the 17th to the 22nd in Rome.
Florence is already booked, but Rome is not- nor the time between-
we leave from the Rome airport at 6:40AM on the 22nd.

We stayed in Siena and Montepulciano last Sept and visited Montecino and Orvieto. That's a tough question because all are nice. But, if I had to make a choice....I would say Montepulciano. WE stayed in a great B&B in town. There were lots of great restaurants and interesting shops. The town is a nice size. Siena is interesting, but when we were there, it was crazy busy. Fortunately, we were staying in a B&B outside the wall so we could escape from the mayhem.

I stayed in Pienza last year (which is in between Montepulciano and Montalcino), which has the advantage over the other two of being rather flat (once you get there--you are in a hilly region). Il Giardino Segreto (The Secret Garden) was a beautiful small hotel right in the town. You can't really go wrong with any of those places. You're best off with a car so you can go between all the towns. The Val d'Orcia (the region of southern Tuscany) is spectacularly beautiful!

That's a tough choice - all those cities are great. I would vote for Montepulciano - we just returned from a trip, and stayed there. It was wonderful. Montepulciano is a good size, big enough to have a large selection of restaurants, shops, etc. but small enough to be relaxing.

You will have a great trip, and enjoy yourselves, wherever you end up!

Great choices. We stayed in Orvieto the night before going into Rome because it's so convenient. It was a very pleasant surprise, major Cathedral, tunnels underground, clifftop rather than a hill top. I'm not sure I'd skip Siena or all the other great Tuscan towns for it though.

all I can tell you is that if I were leaving from anywhere at 6:40 am (which to me means getting up at 3:40 am ...) I would want to be in that city the night before at the very least.

Have you been to Rome before?

If it were me, I would spend all 7 days in Rome, or at the very least the day before departure. Then again, I could stay in Rome and walk those street with a smile on my face the whole time ...
