Italy - Transportation from Milan to Venice
My family is flying into Milan and we want to go straight to Venice. I wonder if there is a bus or coach from the airport in Milan that goes to Venice - Does Alibus or another service go from Milan to Venice?
thank you!

there are now direct trains from the airport into Milan Centrale train station from which zillions of trains head to Venice - expect to take 4-5 hours all told - there may be a few trains that go direct from airport to Venice - anyway just check www.trenitalia.com - the Italian Railways web site for schedules and prices, which vary as to which type of train you take - buy your trhu train ticket at the train station in Malpensa Airport (or at the Rail Desk just outside Customs exit if that still exists) - allow ample time to transfer in the mammoth Milano Centrale station with a zillion different tracks - for lots of good dope on Italian trains I always spotlight these fab IMO sites - www.seat61.com (good rundown on seating layouts, etc for various types of trains); www.ricksteves.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com. Though you can nab discounted tickets online at trenitalia.com when coming by air you either have to leave a lot of fudge time to be able to make your train from Milan Centrale to Venice because if your plane is late the discounted tickets I believe are not easily changeable nor refundable - therefore best IMO just to buy a regular fare ticket upon arrival - the ticket will include any necessary seat reservations in the price and a full fare ticket can be changed to another train if you miss that train I believe. And asw always my decades of traveling on Italian trains makes me recommend paying the bit extra for first class travel on Italian trains - especially if you have luggage as finding a place to store it IME is easier in first class - not to say 2nd class is a cattle car, though at times IME it can be!

Note from the airport there are two different train lines into Milan - one goes to Cardona (sp?) station, a small station near the heart of Milan and the new one goes to Milano Centrale station, Milan's main station where you will get many trains to Venice. Cardona is a dead-end station with no onward connections, not even I believe a direct metro connection.

Note there is only open seating on the shuttle trains from the airport to Milan Centrale and a ticket should be good on any train there - and if buying a full fare ticket to go from Milan to Venice then be sure to validate the ticket yourself by sticking it in machines on the platform before boarding to cancel the ticket or you may be considered to be riding without a valid ticket - some trains may not have conductors so this honor system is in place with however spot checks and steep fines for miscreants - perhaps this has changed recently but that's they way it was last year when I was last on trains in Italy.

Any reason you can't fly to Venice. We've made the trip from Milan by train, auto and plane.
Flying was the least hassle. At the time we did it the add on was not significant. Perhaps that has changed? Of course, by train you'll land smack in the middle of Venice instead of at the distant airport.

>>>Cardona is a dead-end station with no onward connections, not even I believe a direct metro connection.<<<
Cadorna is on the metro and is only a few metro stops from Centrale (green line). I don't think I would go to Cadorna and transfer via metro, but if you do, supposedly you must have a ticket for your luggage. I've never bought one for luggage as I didn't know about it until recently.
>>Luggage Ticket
Price: € 1.00
Validity: 75 minutes after stamping. Ticket is valid for the transport of a single piece of luggage for which a ticket is required. On the Milan city network a standard Milan ticket may be used in place of a luggage ticket. As for all tickets, luggage tickets should be stamped at the start of the journey; luggage tickets should be presented to ticket inspectors alongside your ticket or travel card if requested.<<<

Not all trains are no reserved seating, only R trains. There are some AV/ES trains from the airport to Milan Centrale which are reserved seats only.
Arrival can be unpredictable, but if you want to book tickets in advance on Trenitalia, there are often sale tickets from Milan to Venice for as little as 9€.

Last time I was in cadorna station the metro stop was not in the station with a seemless connection but you had to go outside the station and walk a short distance to the actual metro stop - perhaps during the last few years the metro stop is in the station proper as kybourbon says - probably is if she/he says it!
