Good choice---we will be there again next May.
Look at the bike route south of there to Montichiello and over to Bagno Vignoni.

(zeppole, I didn't have their insalata di farro, but Giulio in Pelleria does the best panzanella you'll ever taste - true summer fare, as well, of course. Mecenate's food is perhaps better sampled at less humid times.)

I will be staying in Lucca for two weeks beginning Sept 9th. We have friends in the town and will be using it for home base. We plan to go to Rome and Florence of course, but would appreciate recommendations on small towns that one could drive to and advice on how much time these locations require. We are into architecture, not museums so much, great food and drink, beautiful sites, shopping and relaxing. We are big walkers. Any tips are greatly appreciated. We are willing to use trains, cars whatever is wisest.

Thank you

lderector, you might want to start your own thread with your questions. You have added on to a 6 year old thread.

Certain towns like Siena and San Gimi are absolutely chaotic during the day and jammed with people. If you can, try to visit after the tour buses leave and you will love your visit. They are wonderful after dark.

In Siena we enjoyed our meal at Taverna Di San Guiseppe.
