Convents do not ask if you are married. I travel often with a male cousin and we've stayed in several convents over the years. No problem at all. These days a lot of convents have other people running their lodging anyway. You might not consider them a business, but they do. Many you wouldn't even know are a convent.
The problem with convents is many don't have AC (a must in August) of they have a curfew. There are only a handful in Rome that have AC out of 200+ convents with lodging.
Monastery Stays is a reseller and marks up the prices so if you do find a convent you want to book, contact the convent directly. The majority of convents in Rome are not listed on Monastery Stays.
Depending on when in August, you might find discounts.
