Italy in April. No Reservations - worthwhile?
We're going to spend April in Northern Italy. A bit of XC skiing, maybe a train ride to Germany or Suisse for a few days luxe car hire on autobahns & mountain roads at silly speeds, then back to [pre booked] Lake Como to recover.
Can't help thinking we can't possibly forecast of the beaut things we will see when we get there - and want to explore for a day or two - so who has done a few weeks without hotel reservations - does it work? Or is it the joy or flexibility less than the luxury of laziness?
Your first hand experiences appreciated.

We like the freedom of no reservations. Never been to those areas in April, so hope other postings give you more info, BUT....we were in all of those places a few years ago in early June with no reservations, and had no problem (well, slight problem at Cinque Terre on the weekend finding room)

I'm not a skier, but I rather doubt that you can go cross-country skiing in April in northern Italy - the snow, I think, will have turned to mud by then.
Check it out on a Web site devoted to skiing.
