Yes, you are correct. If you are absolutely stuck on public trans, then you need to stay in the relatively larger towns.
Personally, I think you are missing out. Driving in the countryside is a breeze and so fun and so free! I've done it twice, the second time solo. No problem!

Dayle - I've tried, but my husband doesn't want to drive, so we'll have to make do with the rail system. I know it's more of a hassle but at least we'll be in Italy. I give you credit for the solo car trip...wow, lots of credit!

Dayle - I admit it, I'm a wimp about driving there. But you have gotten me thinking about where a good place (other than Siena - I'm not having much luck so far with a hotel or B&B in Siena) would be in that part of Tuscany. While I realize it will be harder without a car, we also want to hike a little and don't mind a few days in a small town. If possible, we'd like to visit Volterra, Montalcino, Montepulciano and possibly Lucca. We can spend 4 nights in Tuscany, where do you think would be our best choice as far as a transportation base? Thanks.
