I think Qantas are planning non-stop flights to Rome, on a seasonal basis. Flight is from Perth I believe.

Also if you are still choosing places to visit we loved San Gimignano and Orvieto. You could try a Google Images search to see photos. We had five weeks in Italy (long time ago) and just used public transport.
