In order to plan the trip:
5 days in Rome
3 in Florence
2 in Venice
could be good for you!

Save Venice for later - maybe on a honeymoon one day. <i>Venice is fun with a wife and girlfriend, but not for a brother's trip</i>, especially since it is so far from Rome. Why waste the travel time?

I agree with <b>Doppio</b>. Rome and Southern Italy this time. Great for a guy trip. Also agree with <b>willit</b> - great recommendations!

I suspect the OP in interested in hiking up Mt Vesuvius (as opposed to Etna) during a visit to the Amalfi Coast.
