Puglia and Basilicata are amazing places (we biked round it 2 years ago) probably worth searching Fodors for those two names for a start.
July August the place is full of Italians on Holiday the rest of the time just the localsbut the wine is fab

Hi Trish - If you re-post your question with Puglia in the title I'm sure you'll get some helpful suggestions.
We spent a great week in the Gargano area of Puglia based at Pugnochiuso - near Vieste.
The whole Gargano peninsular is very scenic with a lovely coastline - I can highly recommend it.
