Does anyone which areas of Italy have the beautiful italian tiles? I'd like to bring some home for my kitchen.

I love Ceramica and I am pretty sure that they come from Bologna.

I think the Umbria region is the MOST well known for ceramics, and Deruta may be one of the most famous towns in the region for ceramics. But other regions are also well known for hand-made ceramics, e.g., Caltagirone and Santo Stefano di Camastra in Sicily. Even regions that are not especially famous for ceramics, e.g., Basilicata, have certain towns where there are good ceramics artisans. There are some cities, e.g., Florence and Siena, that sell ceramics from many sources, especially from central Italy.

Deruta in the Umbrian region is known for its distinctive plates, pitchers, vases and ceramic designs. Tiles are available but not as much so as the decorative plates. You will find lots of Italian tiles available for sale down in the south (Naples, Sorrento, the Amalfi coast). I bought some lovely lemon-decorated tiles in both Capri and Sorrento. I use them in my kitchen now. In addition, you might try looking online for merchants that specifically import Italian tiles - in case you can't get to Italy soon!

We founds some great ceramic stores driving to Palermo from Messina on A19 or A20. To be honest, I was told some ceramics come from Romania. I really did not which was authenic or not, but they were beautiful and I just could not bring enough home....

Ceramiche d'Arte is the beautiful shop in Ravello where we found tiles and other ceramics. They have a website if you want to look. We were also in Deruta, but what we found was mostly ceramics of the dinnerware kind--plates, bowls, etc. Not so many tiles. Nonetheless, you can launch a google search and do some previewing. I bet typing in "Italian painted wall tiles" would give you some good leads. Have fun looking, Amylynn! Italian ceramics will steal your heart.

The amalfi coast is known for their tiles. while there a couple of years ago everyone was buying up beautiful tiles on a day trip to capri. I will be spending 10 days on the amalfi coast in sept. and plan on getting more. all the small towns along the amalfi coast have tile work and ceramics. very popular are the numbered address tiles to put on your home. a nice thing to see everyday and remember Italy.

We visited several places in Siena that sold beautiful tiles. We brought back some pottery but the tiles were gorgeous...wish I had a place to put them!

For the tiles Vietri (in Costiera Amalfitana close to Salerno) is the best of the best.

We were in this shop in Deruta last year and bought plates and bowls which they shipped to us in Conn. They sell kitchen tiles as well. Check out their web site. Click the "catalogue" you'll see the tiles section. It ain't cheap!
