This is really a fun read, as usual. And I can relate to the road crossing issues; David saved me, on more than one occasion, from being crushed by a bus. I did not have a problem 'minding the gap'.

Loving your report. Actually rather tired thinking about how much ground you guys covered on your second day. Glad you got to see Manet’s “Bar at the Folies-Bergere” and Van Gogh selfie (minus his ear) which are top drawers at the COURTAULD. Sorry you missed the BENJAMIN FRANKLIN HOUSE – they really have an excellent presentation, but the venue is soooo tiny that not that many can be accommodated at one time.

tom - I was so sorry to have missed the GTG with julia - but anyway I'm grateful for the virtual chance to follow your trip. i find myself shamed that I've never been to Southwark cathedral, though I worked in London for 15 years, nor eaten a three-cheese toastie with Pimms [Pimms? really?] so I'm agog to read what else you've managed to do in 2 weeks that I've not done or seen in 57 years.

My last trip to London I stopped off in Southwark Cathedral to thaw out after visiting Borough Market, but had no idea I should have been looking for a toastie! I love cheese, and am a big fan of Welsh rarebit, so will definitely have to try one next time.

Yes, Southward cathedral's an unknown gem, we stumbled upon it just by chance last summer and I was spellbound, its simply gorgeous. Need to check out the three cheese toasties though, missed that one at the Borough Market

Love the TR. Despite living in London for more than 10 years haven't been to Southwark Cathedral - will have to put that on the list. Have heard about the cheese toastie but not yet tried it - don't think I could eat one with Pimms, too sickly. Did the Monument myself recently, very proud of my certificate.
Looking forward to the next instalment, sounds like - despite the drawbacks, which make things soooo interesting - you had a blast.

There was a hint of mint. Fortunately the mint and other flavors masked most of the cucumber taste, but it was really very good. The next time we make Shepherd's Pie, I'll try to concoct this drink at home. I wonder if it goes with Sticky Toffee Pudding?

Enjoying your trip report, tagging along for the ride.
Pimms - it is essentially a British summertime drink. Drunk at weddings, Royal Ascot, Wimbledon, and countless garden parties and barbecues. Picnics, festivals, garden fetes, or just on the terrace or lawn at home. Whenever the weather is hot and sunny, hence the mint, cucumber, borage, etc. Pimms goes well with light summer food, like salads, salmon, cold meats, strawberries and cream, Eton mess, that sort of thing.
Pimms disappears from all normal human consciousness after September, or once the leaves start to change colour, which ever happens first, and everyone forgets about it until the first hot sunny weekend, usually sometime in May.
There is a winter Pimms, designed to be drunk with hot apple juice, but it's not been that much of a success - frankly, if we Brits want a hot alcoholic drink we opt for mulled wine or a whisky toddy.
