Istrian Peninsula..Why so special?

Fron all your descriptions area sounds

I am looking for that French\Italian Riveria
feeling..but have seen both & want someplace different. Only have perhaps 10 days in April or May & want some R&R by an ocean, 3 or 4 days & then move on. Was thinking to go into Italy (Trieste) or stay in the Istrian area. Will not have a car.

Given a choice between somewhere in Trieste and somewhere on the Istrian, I'd certainly pick the latter. Stay in some charming seaside town like Opatija, visit inland and along the entire shore of the peninsula. There are some beautiful villages, smashing views, and the people all seem very nice. Weather always seems to be pleasant there, but that's perhaps just because I was lucky. Good luck to you too.

Opatija is ok but not for 10 days. We like Piran better. Also, you may want to consider one of the Kvarner islands. Check out Rab or Mali Losinj. Good food, nice beaches and May is before the hoardes arrive.
Cheers,
Jan

Wayne, please more background on the comment on Trieste. We are intrigued by what we have read.

Are you just pro-Istrian in general, or do you have specific, negative impressions I should listen to with regard to Trieste? (I should add that it is something of a James Joyce pilgrimage for us.)
