Jersey is very popular among the British and rightly so. There aren't many Americans. This might be because you need to know a lot of geography to know where Jersey is located.

I have been to Jersey several times.

There was a very popular detective show on TV which made Jersey popular much as Hawaii Five-O did for Hawaii.

I think the Jersey Tourist Board has a website. They do publish a list of hotels. Many of them are small.

The big and expensive hotel is the Grand (I think). I've stayed at the Greenwood Lodge in Roseville Road. Nearby is a medium sized hotel (the Metropole, I think) which Bergerac thought that a crook was staying. The crook was actually staying at the Atlantic. Both are real hotels.

Some people prefer to stay in the north (like Bonne Nuit Bay). These areas are much quieter than St. Helier, the main town.

Activities include VAT free shopping, seeing relics of the German occupation (such as German Underground Hospital). There is a monolithic tomb at La Hougue Bie. There are several small museums at this site in order to jazz it up. I think one of them is a railroad museum.

One of the bunkers on the western beaches houses a private German occupation museum.

You can visit the three main castles. One is at Gorey Pier. It looks like what castles are suppose to look like. Elizabeth Castle is accessible by foot during low tide near St. Helier. It isn't as strong looking as Gorey Castle but it was built as a better defense than Gorey Castle. There's another one at St. Aubin.

You can check the internet to check on the place names that I've mentioned. I'm sure that they are accurate but I am writing this post from memory.

It is possible to spend a full week in Jersey. If you get bored, you could always visit the old city at St. Malo in France, Guernsey, Alderney, or Sark (where no cars are allowed).

I have a 1988 edition of "Insights Guide -- Channel Islands" published by APA Press Pte. Ltd. Perhaps it has been updated. It's an excellent guide with history, photos, good maps, tourist info (hotels, restaurants, activities), local legends, even recipes.

In the travel tips section, there is information on several offices that could help you. Hopefully, this information is current:

The States of Jersey Tourism Committee
The Weighbridge
St. Helier
Jersey, Channel Islands, United Kingdom
Tel. 0534-78000
[Go thru int'l operator to get complete phoning codes.]

Jersey Tourism
35 Albemarle Street
London, W1X 3FB, England
Tel. 01-493-5278
[The "01" is outdated; London codes have since changed.]

British Tourism
40 West 57th Street, 3rd Floor
New York, NY 10019
Tel. 212-581-4700

British Tourism
350 South Figueroa Street, 450
Los Angeles, CA 90071
Tel. 213-628-3525

British Tourism
857 North Michigan Avenue, #3320
Chicago, IL 60611
Tel. 312-787-0492

British Tourism
2305 Cedar Springs Road
Dallas, TX
Tel. 214-720-4040

Good luck! And have fun. The Channel Islands are very interesting. If possible, visit other islands. Each one has a different atmosphere.

The London STD codes have changed. 01 was changed to 0171 and 0181. Later it was changed again to 020 and add 7 to the number. So the new number might be
(020)7493 5278. Many Londoners say 0207 493 5278.

From the US, don't dial the first zero. So it's 011 44 20 7493 5278

All British codes changed. The Jersey code is 01534, not 0534.

I stayed at the Hotel Monterey in St. Helier for three days in March. I was generally unimpressed with the hotel (small room, noisy, poor service in the restaurant and limited breakfast hours), but they did have the advantage of responding promptly to emails.

The more expensive Hotel de France, just over the road, was much nicer, but didn;t respond to emails at all.
