Is Tottenham Court Rd. Station open?
I'm trying to plan our days in London, beginning next Thursday, and noticed on the TFL journey planner that extensive work is being done on this station. I'm thinking of going to the British Museum next Sunday, March 1, (from hotel at Gloucester Rd.) and will probably need to tube there, then take the tube to St. Paul's.
I see where some lines are closed, but am I correct in thinking that we'll be OK getting to these two places on the tube?

Go to www.tfl.gov.uk, and select "Live travel news", select a date and "tube stations". Tottenham Court Road tube station isn't listed as due to be closed on March 1st.
But you also have the option of buses 8, 25 or 242 to St Paul's, which won't take you much longer and will give you something to look at en route:

Hi Hagan- I don't see that Tottencourt Rd Station will be closed next week. the station that will be closed next weekend is Goodge Street. did you look here?

You can search by a specific date, or you can download the Station Closures and Track Closures PDF files for the next 6 month from the link above.
Have a good trip, and I hope you can come back to give us a report!

Get the direct Piccadilly Tube to Holborn for British Museum, you can then use Holborn to get to St Pauls on the Central Line.
Returning from St Pauls it's best to go to Blackfriars or Mainsion House and get a direct District Line Tube back to Gloucester Road

Thanks for the replies. PatrickLondon, I have the printout of "Key bus routes in central London" that shows the routes that go to the major sites. I don't see where the #8 bus goes near the British Museum, and the others don't seem to be on this map. Maybe I'm not reading it correctly?

Hagan- if you look at the PDF link that PatrickLondon posted, you can see the dark green line is #8. The stop towards St Pauls is stop Z in the street map, which is on New Oxford Street east of Tottenham Court Rd station.
All 3 buses that PatrickLondon listed, #8, 25, and 242, all stop at Stop Z.

Thanks AlanRow,
I agree that the Holborn station makes much more sense for us. But returning from St. Paul's, the District line is closed on Sunday from Embankment east to the end of the line, and Blackfriar's station is supposedly closing in March for an indefinite period (this is per the tfl website). I guess we'll need to tube back to Holborn, then take the Picadilly line back to Gloucester Rd.

YK and PatrickLondon,
How do you get the map inset for the different areas, as you did for the British Museum? My problem with the buses is, I don't see where to pick them up or to get off by just looking at the route maps, as there are no roads on them. What am I not doing right?

Hi Hagan-
try this:
http://journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk/im/SI-T.html
It's an interactive map. Put your cursor over any station and click on it. You will see a box with several choices, one of which is "Local Area Map". Click on that and a new window will pop up with the local map with station stops listed.
For example, if you do that for the Gloucester Rd tube station, and click on local area map, you'll get:
http://journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk/Dow...cesterRoad.pdf
But you don't really need to worry too much, because most bus stops in Central London will have a map at the waiting area that lists all the stops in that area with bus routes shown, so you can always go to the nearest bus stop to figure out if that's the right one or not.
PatrickLondon's link is a bit different (and I think more preferable because it shows the bus routes and where they go). He got there by going to TFL's main page, then:
1) Getting Around
2) Buses (under "Maps" heading)
3) Bus maps (under "Individual bus routes")
4) Browse alphabetical list - eg if you click on "T", you can find Tottenham Court Road. click on that and it'll bring up the PDF link that PatrickLondon provided in his post.
