If someone could comment on the length of the train trips, I'd appreciate it. We could drop Cordoba and substitute another city enroute to/from Madrid or within a few hours of Granada. We can also rent a car and do some driving.
Days 1-3 Madrid (have a conference, no choice in this) to include one day trip to Toledo
Day 4 fly early to Grenada,
Day 5 Grenada
Day 6 early morning train to Cordoba
Day 7 late afternoon train back to Madrid for flight home the next day.

The only afternoon train from Granada to Madrid is the ALTARIA, which departs at 18:50, arriving in Madrid at 23:25 (11:25 PM).
There is also an early morning ALTARIA train departing Granada at 06:50, arriving in Cordoba at 09:17. It then continues on to Madrid, non-stop.

hi, stotz,
once you've got your travel sorted, don't forget to pre-book your alhambra tickets; you should try to see it at night and day - the night -time trip is completely diffferent to the day, and not to be missed!
regards, ann
