What time of the year? What type of transportation btwn sites you will/will not considered (other than where ferry was indicated)? How many days are you allocating to do this? do you have home bases alrady identified? Ages of travelers? what type sightseeing you like to do?

Trying to answer your post with the limited info you provided is like batting in the dark. The common route most people opt to do is the Norway in a Nutshell (NIN). My husband and I were a bit more adventurous and drove. We were able to explore a lot more than the NIN allows you to, including stopping at leisure at so many breathtaking spots and going into the small villages. That said, we did this in late June-early July (there was still snow in some mountains spots!)

This is what we did after a couple of days in Bergen:

Bergen to Ulvik by bus and ferry on the Hardangerfjord. Spend the night in Ulvik.

Bus from Ulvik to Voss. Train from Voss to Flam, boat down the Naeroyfjord and then an overnight at the Stalheim Hotel, www.stalheim.com. (Don't miss the Naeroyfjord.)

Bus/ferry from Stalheim to Balestrand, overnight in Balestrand.

Public transportation is great in Norway. Buses wait for trains and ferries.

The fast boat from Bergen to Flam is not particularly pleasant/scenic. You pretty much have to stay inside.

Thanks for the suggestions/comments.
Age is not always important. Fitness and ability to go it on your own are often more important.
I find this site useful as you get lots of insights that are useful in planning.
We are regular travellers, always like to use public transport in preference to driving
Day one is 3rd September this year
Each number corresponds with one day
Had thought of home bases as Bergen Flam Balestrand Geiranger and Oslo [too many for our normal travel, but it seems necessary to cover all the beauty
Thanks Marija for the comment on the fast ferry from Bergen to Flam. Perhaps this segment
4. Bergen to Flam by ferry
5. Flam Myrdal Voss Gudvangen Flam trip
could now look like this:
4.Extra day in Bergen
5.Bergen to Flam rail and bus
and so on

Guess that the secret is to keep massaging the itinerary

The change you suggest above make sense. One trip along a major part of the Sognefjord should be enough to give you a good impression of the fjord.

Day 5 should then either be:
- Train from Bergen to Myrdal.
- Train from Myrdal to Flåm
- Boat from Flåm to Gudvangen
- Boat from Gudvangen to Flåm

or:
- Train from Bergen to Voss
- Buss from Voss to Gudvangen
- Boat from Gudvangen to Flåm
- Train from Flåm to Myrdal
- Train from Myrdal to Flåm

Then you would stay overnight in Flåm. If you are looking for a reasonably priced, clean place to stay there, I suggest you consider Heimly Pensjonat: http://www.heimly.no/index_en.html

While in Balestrand I suggest you spend a few hours to visit a very nice viewpoint located some distance up the side of the mountain directly behind Balestrand. From there you have a fantastic view over Sognefjord. There are a couple of wooden benches there as well as a mailbox holding a small guest book. The tourist information office in Balestrand will be able to give you a detailed explanation on how to get to this viewpoint.
