Debra,
just a couple of thoughts.

It really depends on what countries you are going to. When I was in England a few years ago, we had to spend a minimum amount to qualify for the VAT refund. It ended up barely worth the effort.
I just got back a month or so ago, from Ireland. Now their rules are completely different. They have NO min. purchase requirement. We asked for the VAT vouchers whenever we spent more than $15. Then the night before we were to fly home, we took about 15 - 30 min to fill out all the rest of the info, and when we got to the airport, we went to the counters. No hassle , very little time.
I saved between $40 - $60 easily.

oh, some merchants ( Waterford Crystal comes to mind) will put the refund right back on your credit card, as long as you turn in the forms at the airport.

Be sure to get all your facts straight before you leave so that you understand how it all works.

debbie

Kudos to all of you! You seem to have a real handle (especially Simon) about how it works. Essentially, it is not that difficult as long as you get the form and get the customs stamp on the form. Actually, we even have a location in Grand Central Station in New York where a currency exchange will give you cash on the spot for your cheques.
Each country's laws vary slightly, but the process remains the same.
I work for the largest company that processes these refunds. Global Refund works with over 130,000 shops worldwide in 28 countries. If you have specific questions about how to obtain a refund, I would direct you to www.globalrefund.com or you can call at 800-566-9828, or email at [email protected]
