We were in Italy several years ago and it was a very warm
April. All our hotels had air-conditioning. However, we
were informed that the government prohibits using it
until perhaps June when very warm days are constant.

We were informed that the same goes for heat...that it
could be November when cold nights are there to stay
for the winter.

We were not pleased and there were several nights when
the heat/humidity interfered with good sleep.

A few years ago we were in the Italian Lakes during a heat wave beginning on 9/11 and it was unbearable in our hotel room. I always make sure hotels have a/c but they had already turned it off for the season. We walked through another hotel which was cool so it wasn't the town. Ruined our visit to that locale.

In the winter if you can open the windows and get fresh air does that mean you don't need the air conditioning usually known as HEAT???

For what it's worth, I just booked an apartment in Florence and the rental agency says "The date of the heat being turned on/off is controlled by the government."

We rented an apartment in May with a/c and could not figure out how to get it to come on. It was warm and the mosquito population was bad with the windows opened. The owner told us the next day when we asked that it was not allowed to be turned on till June according to the Gov. He brought us these things to plug into the walls to repel the bugs. We lit coils on our patio at night and that helped also.

In Venice this year the 'turn on' date for air conditioning and heating was 15th October; not good when it was 12 degrees C and raining from 9th October. Di

Same issues applied in Spain in both the paradoxes and commercial hotels we stayed in.

The funny side of this is in Paris where everyone, male and female, magically sports coats and [of course tres chic] scarves on a certain date, even if it is sweltering. They must announce it on television.

There's this thing called Google and you can enter things in it such as whether the government controls AC in Italy. Threads like this turn up.
