The opera at the Caracalla Baths.

This site is out of date but it gives an idea of what's available. This is the place to view opera in Rome.

Not a huge music fan (can't carry a tune in a bucket and music was agony for 8 grades of school where it was mandatory.) My mother tried to instill in all of us a love of opera by sharing her records with us (does that date me!) but I never "got it". However, two years ago in Budapest with friends, who all wanted to go to the opera, I decided to give it a try.

I am glad I did it. The surroundings (such grandeur) and people watching were fun. I listened to my friends before so I had a shot of understanding the opera story. I am still not a fan of opera, but have a little appreciation and I told my mother in my prayers that I had done it for her and hoped it made up for one or two of my many shortcomings. Hope she got the message in heaven. I might even go again in another decade or so if I had someone with me to give a heads up on what was happening.

So I would say go, unless it means giving up something else you know that you would enjoy more.

Haven't been in Rome and probably won't only because there are so many things to do, I wouldn't find the time.

The opera experiences I want are La Scala and Verona. La Scala is obvious. Verona because they perform outdoors in the third largest Roman colliseum. Unlike the colliseum ruin in Rome, Verona is in good working order and is used for opera every summer. It captures the imagination to watch opera in a 2000 year old building.

The Baths of Caracalla is similar to Verona. The baths are very large, and very old too.

They have enough space to have large elephants part of the decor. I keep planning on visiting to this place but there's always some reason.

One thing to consider is your normal touring style and how full a day you will have had. I would suggest a light touring day with a long rest in the afternoon....I've slept during evening events for which I've purchased advance tickets because it was the first time I sat down all day and I just couldn't keep my eyes open!
