We spent Christmas in Paris in 2000 and in Rome in 2002. (Love those reward points!)

We had some three rainy days in each city, but on the clear days in Rome, the temperature was far more pleasant and we were able to sit at outdoor tables without looking for an available heater.

Thanks to DW's Jesuit education we were able to get tickets for midnight mass at the Vatican. It was a very moving experience, despite and, in part, because of the Pope's obvious weakness.

In Rome, more than in Paris, we found that attractions which normally would have long lines, e.g. an exhibit of Rembrandt drawings, were simply available for walk up patrons. That was true of the Borghese as well. In Paris, OTOH, there were the usual lines at the Louvre; and, there were, to us, surprising crowds at Giverny.

There were long lines to the Vatican museum when we were there. We went on about Dec. 23 and we got there before it opened; waited half an hour, so not bad. Later in our vacation we walked by and the line was much longer then.

The Borghese website said you needed timed entry but we did not go and check to see if it were true.
