Is Paris safe for tourists on May 1st?

The Netherlands doesn't celebrate Labour Day because they are too mean to give the workers another day off.
April 30th only became Koninginnedag when Juliana became Queen in 1948, and Beatrix kept it as such because her birthday is in January. It is held on April 29th if the 30th is a Sunday (see what I mean about too mean too give another day off?).
Before Juliana it was on August 31st, a much better time for it imho, since we have a great cluster of holidays (well 4 of the 7 holidays) in April/May and then nothing until Christmas.
It will be interesting to see if it moves to WimLex's birthday when he becomes king, and it becomes Koningsdag - Kings day, much to the disappointment of the Gay community

If elderly relatives are worried about Paris on May 1st don't suggest Amsterdam on April 30th
