We recently spent 3 days in Palermo on a full tour of the entire island. I felt sad leaving - we loved it so much. It is a vibrant city with FANTASTIC shopping! The street tables go on and on a few blocks from the "four corners" - we had so much fun shoping there. We bought so much we couldn't carry it all. It is also a beauitful city - but as stated above - crazy traffic. We saw Vespas riding the sidewalks everywhere and kept saying "Huh -they allow that??!!!"
We talked about going back there sometime for a few more days - sooo much to see that we missed. One afternoon we were on a main steet - packed with traffic and the high school got out. We were surrounded by hundreds of teens, fooling, pushing each other, smoking. They were very respectful of us and nobody bothered us. At night we walked outside a few blocks from our hotel in main well lit areas but no - I would not venture around at night....but then...neither would I in Boston or NY or Aruba - in sketchy areas at night. Go to Palermo - it is the soul of Sicily!
