Is Nice that great?

Or would you recommend staying in Village Eze or Villefranche instead? What is there to do in Nice?

Hi Michelle. It depends on what you like. Nice is a big city, Villefranche is a much smaller town, and Eze is a very small perched village. As just a couple of examples, Nice has some great art museums -- especially the Matisse Museum -- and a wonderful old town.

We thought Nice was a fabulous city, especially if you are able to stay at the Le Grimaldi Hotel. The food everywhere was wonderful (be certain to sample the Bourride which is an incredible fish stew), the neighborhoods quaint (especially the old city), it was easy to navigate, the shops fantastic, prices relatively moderate (in our estimation) and the weather about the best in all of France. Plus, the city is well situated for easy day trips and excursions by bus and/or train along the French Riviera. I'd recommend about three nights in Nice to everyone. Bon voyage!

P.S. I always stay in Nice because I love it, but if you feel like spending a lot of money on a hotel, and would love staying overnight in a small, and very picturesque, perched village, then I couldn't recommend Eze Village enough.

I loved Nice. It is big but everyone there is very friendly. Someone mentioned the Matisse Museum - don't forget the Chagall Museum also!

We also had the best seafood dinner ever on the Marche de Fleurs.

Nice is one of my favorite cities. It seems much less snobby than some of the other cities along the Riveria, and offers great people-watching ( esp. along the Promenade des Anglais at night when there is often live entertainment, rollerbladers, people hanging out at the beach or creperie stands etc.) and a wonderful old town with some of the best seafood I've had in France ( I'd recommend Le Safari in particular although it's crowded and service can be painfully slow).

We usually stay at the Westminster COncorde, which somebody here called "The Poor Man's Negresco", a very apt description. The upper floors face the sea, and there is nothing better than stepping out on your terrace in the morning to see the sparkling Mediterranean.

Also Nice offers great transportation to the other towns and cities on the Riveria.

Have a great time!
