Yeah, it seems to be a long walk.. We won't have that much time for a 5.5 mile hike. If we are done with the Cheese Factory and Gruyeres and still have a reasonable amount of time we'll take a bus or train to the Chocolate Factory in Bronc. If not, we'll just skip the chocolate tasting. We had a tour of HERSHEY'S CHOCOLATE WORLD Factory in Hershey, PA in 1999. So... we have an idea...

neckervd, the path goes along the river, but Les Marches is not on the river and in order to cut the distance we'll need keep East to reach Les Marches and later Forcel and Bronc Fabrique area. The problem is to find a correct path from the river to Les Marches and later to Forcel. Is this path marked?
I realize it is not a problem to reach the chocolate factory from Gruyeres within 1 hour for someone who knows the area, but it can be a problem for someone visiting the area for the first time... So potentially the hike can take 2 hours or more..

if you like longer hikes in Gruyeres county, have a look at the map and find the trails from Plan Francey (Moleson Village) cableway (rope railway) station via Gros Plané - Le Villard - Belle Chaux - Salette - Grand Pra - Paccot Dessus - Guedeyres - Caudon - Col de Soladier - Cergniaule to Sonloup cableway (rope railway) station.
In May white narcissus flowers around Paccot Dessus, Les Petites Preises and La Cergniaule, red alpine rhododendron east of Belle Chaux, on the alternative small trail to Salette.
Many possibilities to go down to the bus stations around Les Paccots for people who don't want to hike the whole trail.

I don't know why you double the distance and why you want to walk along the railway line (very boring). But it's up to you.>
I thought you said the trail pretty much went along the railway or parallel to it - my mistake - I looked in Thomas Cook Timetable and they said the distance by train was 9.5 kms so I said well it's about 5.5 miles - so the train takes a round-about route I guess which is often the case?

I have a question for you regarding a short Lake Murten cruise from Murten to Praz and a hike through vineyards up Mont Vully. How long is the hike? Do you have a map of the hike?
Also, does it make sense on the way back not to take a boat and walk to Murten clockwise around the lake?

The boat ride takes 15 min or so, far away from a cruise!
Sugiez - Murten is a absolutely flat 7 kms hike through some lowland riparian forest (almost no views to the lake).
As to the Mont Vully walk, there are tons of different trails.
Have a look at the map. You got the link to the Swiss map some 40 hrs ago.
People with some historic interests hike rather from Murten or Faoug or Vallamand to the Roman amphitheatre of Avenches.

No problem PalenQ. I'll definitely report back on our hikes if we have any. It will mostly depend on the weather condition.. If weather is bad we'll concentrate on other activities in the area..

Since we have an early flight we'll stay overnight near Geneva airport and explore Geneva on our last day in Switzerland. Rick Steves advises to "skip big, dull city of Geneva". Nevertheless we are sure that we can have a good time there. We will leave Montreux after breakfast, drop our luggage at the hotel and will have the whole day for Geneva. Any recommendation on how to "structure" our time there?

I rather like my three stays in Geneva - there is an old town with cathedral that many miss and the boat rides along the historic and fancy villas lining the lake shores is neat - boat rides are always neat in Switzerland.
Have a gut fahrt as I see on German train station walls - which I guess means have a "good ride"! But I rather like repeating the German have a "gut fahrt!"
