Is it too early to book airfare to Rome?

We are traveling to Italy in late April...Rome, to be exact. I have been searching the engines...best I found was about $700. I was told to look at a flight from NYC to London and then use one of the budget flights from there. Does anyone have any suggestions. And do you think the prices will come down in later Jan or Feb.
