Myer - are you going to Spain again?
I didn't go through the whole process, because I don't want tickets, but on the top right hand side of the Renfe website, there is a box that says "Tiknet, Compra de Billetes". Click that. Then, on the next page, click on English. Once it translates, click on the "Ticket Sales" link on the left. Put in your cities and the date, then select the trains you want, then register as a customer, and then you should be able to buy tickets.

Kaudrey.
No, I'm not planning a trip yet.
The daughter of some friends is studying in Barcelona for a semester and they're visiting in mid-October. I'm just helping them.
I'm trying to convince them to spend a couple of days in Seville even though it's out of the way.
Originally they wanted to overnight. i may have convinced them to take a cheap Iberia flight.
If they do that the only train will be AVE from Sevilled to Madrid and they can buy that when they arrive in Barcelona.

I've bought a ticket online through renfe. I don't remember it being that difficult, although you do have to register -- I think the tricky thing is they ask for a national ID number. Since I am American, I don't have one, so just typed in my passport number. It doesn't fit the box (box too small, as I recall), but I just typed in the beginning digits of it as far as I could. That was fine.
I think there is a trick in that you can only reserve one ticket online if you are not a repeat customer, and only after you pick up that ticket in person, can you reserve more tickets online. Something like that, anyway.

tell them not to stand in long lines at train station for tickets but go to any travel agent and get them.
have to pay a couple euros for the service, but worth itif lines arelong. can also be reerved on phone with credit card.
then picked up at customer service up to a few hours before the departurwe.
remember, first class passengers get to use the VIP lounges at stations. very nice perk.
and first class does give you food and drink(unlimited drink last time i took it) as well included in the price usually.

At this point the only train they'll use is AVE from Seville to Madrid.
I'll have them buy the tickets when they first arrive in Barcelona at el Cote Ingles.
We bought tickets at their Seville store during our trip this past June.

Flying is a good idea. For some reason Renfe TrenHotel tickets cannot be purchased on-line. Nor could we obtain TranHotel tickets at the El Corte Ingles shop ... we ended up trekking to the train station.
I hope your friends have a great trip!
