And if you stay where you are booked in the evening, , buy wine, cheese, pate, olives, sit outside and listen to the cigales in the clear air,

You might want to consider spending a day and night at Marseille instead. It is a beautiful city especially around the Old Port area, the two forts guarding the port and the Notre Dame du Garde basilica on the hill above the port and walk the beaches and coast just beyond the port. (you could take bus 83 out and walk back or vice versa) You can walk these areas and the center city easily.

I thought Cassis was nice but I would never spend another night there. It just is not so different from so many Riviera coast towns.

If you want to see the calanques you can easily do it from Marseille by taking the metro and bus 21. Take the metro line 2 from the tourist office at the Old Port to "Rond point du Prado" and then bus 21. Metro trip is about 10 minutes and bus about 15 minutes. This will take you to calanque "Sugiton". It is then a 20-25 minute walk to the calanque from the parking area. It is not possible to drive as there are no roads only trails out to the sea and around the calanque.

You can make a full day of hiking Sugiton calanque as the trails wind through the mountains and down to the sea for miles. It is really not a difficult walk as the trails are wide and footing is good.
