... Calamari, are you in Thousand Oaks? Yes, I come to LA and Malibu often, mid October will be next. I'm sitting at dinner in a lodge in southern Africa last year, and next to this is a rather sharp looking woman - who tells me she is from Thousand Oaks. Here we are, below the Equator, nine time zones from CA, and discussing every section of the beach and place to surf. We could hear the lions roaring, and it was very funny - we called them the local waves breaking. True.

I waded the inlset above Surfrider Beach and got in front of the Colony a week ago, and walked the entire length, until I got to rock outcropping that blocked further travel west.

I have looked up from PCH and seen a huge house, like a castle, near Cross Creek, so I do know this place, I believe. I also know Cher's house and it is near there.

Tell your parents if I see them at the Reel Inn, I'll buy them a beer. You do know Marilyn is doing a GTG in SF this fall - are you going up?

Take care.

Sorry, I have never been to Africa. Sadly, the lady you spoke of was not me. I live in San Diego. I would LOVE to go to the Foderite gathering. My kids just started back to school and I have loads of clients that will keep me v. busy untill around Christmas. Depending on the date, I just might fly up for one night. What restaurant will it be at? Since it will be in CA it would be a crime to miss out.

Hey, San Diego is a nifty city - have attended loads of conferences there, by the Marina area - usually Marriott on West Harbor. Is it Old Town where the lamps and restaurants are? Your skyline is great to photograph!

Marilyn says the GTG will be at someone's home in Sf, which happily will not be posted on Fodors, LOL. Apparently one needs to email Marilyn and be added to the list. I'm watching for the date to be posted, and will play it from there.

I just thought you might be from the Thousand Oaks area. But being in SD, we could always discuss I-5, 405 and 10 - oh, I know it like my hand. Yes, you'd love Africa - the animals are amazing. Next year, all Botswana, by small plane. You'll also see Kavey talking about Botswana. Ever visit the Africa site? After dealing with safaris costs, I have ceased complaining about nyc and London hotel prices!!!!!

Take care. Some of my favorite restaurants are so solely due to memorable calamari.

pch, you are SUCH a flirt! No sooner does NYCFoodSnob jet off to Italy with her boy toy than you are slipping innuendos to Calamari. That does it -- you MUST attend the SF get together!

Yes, I'm totally addicted. I spent months researching Italy on the boards, then a week writing my travel report, and now I spend all my time responding to questions. I can't stop...but maybe I'll switch forums. I think Hawaii is next on our list.

... oh, Marilyn, you've found me out. But I'm quite out done by Italy, it's simply everyplace one looks. It has been a rough day! I'd love to attend, thus will be watching. Right now I'm watching the calendar, counting the days until her return. With her boy toy, how gauche!!! Probably Italian too.

Yes, I am hooked as well. I started several months ago while planning a trip to Italy. We leave 9/6 for 3 weeks. I have gotten so much great information and insight. Thanks to all of you. Also, I absolutely love reading about everybody elses experiences and travels! I don't even feel as guilty for doing this during slow work times, after reading this post!

I certainly agree that folks on here are about as cool as it gets.

I've got indirect ties to famous people:

My sister met the band U2 in New Orleans one time, and at various times served Madonna, Dennis Rodman, Gabriel Byrne and Matthew Modine in Atlanta, when she worked in a little shop there. She also ran into Steve Martin when she was backpacking in Amsterdam. And my grandparents worked for the movie studios for years, catering on location for many well known movies with many well known actors.

I'm still undecided as to whether my and my husband's meeting Bill Clinton twice (before he was President) counts, lol.

PCH.

That would be "The Gaslamp" that you were referring to. Old Town is a historical/tourist trap with good, make that fair, margaritas.

The traffic here is S.D. is bad but I grew up traveling on PCH - flooded highway, rock slides and fires. And that is what I had to go through just to get to high school every morning in West L.A.! Don't miss that at all! The parents can hack it because they only leave the house on occassion. Like to evacuate.

... yes, Blue_Velvet might make a half decent screen name. But since I did contribute to Hillary's NY race, and shook her hand when I bought her book (2 cc), I'll forgo the opportunity.

... yes, Gaslamp - I was after all a tourist, so it seem fitting.

...PCH is an adventure. I recall the fires and seeing people on the beach, trying to escape the smoke and flames. I drive those canyons, and wonder how one might possibly fight a fire in such rugged terrain.

... Have a good day ... I'm off to the airport later, to enjoy the waters a bit east of you, like 2000+, LOL. Take care.

... Oh, parting thought - Italians cannot pitch tents - but it's the tiny flaws that lend interest. Have a good day.
