You will find out quickly that people in San Fransisco, no matter the sexual preference, do not like it when it is called San Fran or Frisco. You can blame a old dead straight guy called Herb Caen for that. You must use the full name San Fransisco.

To check music performances on those dates, go to pollstar.com and select San Francisco and your dates. To check other entertainment events go to sfgate.com and click on the entertainment section.

One more thing on the city names: When you are actually in Northern CA, San Francisco is often just called "the city."

Just walk around the Castro and you will get a sense. You might check out The Castro Theater and see what is playing. It is a very audience participating place(think hissing at the daughter in Stella Dallas). There are some ok places to dine in the Castro but IMHO you could do much better heading down Market to Zuni or over to the Mission (Bar Tartine) or Delfina. I just raved about Bar Jules which is in Hayes Valley(near the Castro). Check out sfgate.com as others have suggested.
