Ok. I know the Reel Inn you are talking about. I was not sure people actually ate there. You are right, it does look seedy.

I know the chef/owner of Allegria. Have to say I have not eaten there since high school way before he owned it though. Sorry, but "good restaurants" and "Malibu" just have never gone together. I really have never understood why. The locals sure support the crap that is out there. My parents like the roasted chickens from Howes (used to be Trancas Market). I like to head up to Oxnard for some really grimmy Mexican Food with my mom once in awhile.

The people of Malibu are starving and nobody cares!!!

Yes, I am super-addicted and wondering when divorce proceedings will begin, as my husband, who once encouraged me to get online pre-computer days, now feels he has created a monster.

But seriously I love to get online with questions before a trip, and after a trip, I love to read other people's experiemces....I learn a lot and I guess I am just a voyeur at heart.

... lol, then you must know Casa Malibu at 22752 PCH. What a gem! Fireplaces in the rooms, the Pacific booming 100 feet away. Granita brings scones and coffee each morning, and it's only a 10 minute walk up to Surfrider Beach. Very 50's.

... this time we waded across a small inlet and walked the beach in front of the Colony, trying to look like we belonged with the stars!

... Allegria is very nice, simple southern italian. Good tuscans by the glass. They've actually built an extension, so one may sit upstairs with only a roof for nicer weather.

... But, you're right - not a diner's paradise. That's why we normally head into LA for dinner. Or, the small shopping center on Cross Creek, just off PCH, offers some decent places, very informal. Good food, not great food.

... at Reel Inn, you eye the fish you want, point it out, order some wine and stand around until your number is called. This is fried city, nothing dainty here. Fun, and yes, very seedy. But nice, and hopefully health violations at a minimum ... although I'd probably take pass on a tour of the kitchen if invited.

BTW, I would love to visit Boston! I have never been! Travel all over the world but have seen very little of the USA comparitively speaking.

Yes, I know where the Casa Malibu is however I have never been inside since I have my own casa in Malibu. Sounds very nice and a great place to plunck my visitors down next time all of their vacations roll around.

I have to admit, I would like Granita a whole lot more if they would bring scones to me in bed. Room service happens to be the key to my heart!

If you like Italian food, have you been to Il Fornaio in Santa Monica or I Cugini?

Have to admit that I also am becoming addicted . . scarry thought. All of you are really knowlegable and it's really fun to read about what everyone is doing and what everyone knows, especially about Italy.

Best crab legs I ever had were in Boston. Lazy crab legs, shelled and baked in a dish with herbed bread crumbs and light butter/white wine sauce.

I am developing crab legs sitting here at my desk reading all of these posts when I should be out swimming or WORKING! It is well worth it. You are all so entertaining. Better than some of my real friends in fact!

Count me in for the San Francisco fodorite gathering.

Koshka, I can't believe you were at that fodors.com focus group in San Francisco a few years back!!! I was there too! I wonder if we met. Were you the one who told me she canceled her Gourmet subscription after finding out about epicurious.com? Anyway, that was how I found out about this site . . . way back before they even launched it. And now, yes, I am addicted.

... Calamari, do you ever simply drive the canyons looking at all the houses perched on the mountain side? Last week, we spied a new asian style house, but could never locate the street it abutted. We finally discovered that the builder constructed a tram from a street below the new house, and hauled his materials and tools up. Presumably the new owners will enter the house via tram - prbably 150 feet long. Can you imagine the cost. This place is very visible from PHC near Casa Malibu.

No, I have never seen the house you are referring to. I am usually in such a hurry to get to the folks house on the beach side that I rarely notice anything but the cars infront of me. It is almost a three hour drive with anxiouse kids and traffic. I will certainly keep my eyes open next time. Sounds amazing yet in violation of local building codes and the coastal commission. Have you seen the castle up above cross creek? I used to know the dentist who owned it. What a great kitchen!

Do you visit Malibu often? Sounds like it from your name and local knowledge.

BTW, you mentioned wanting to see "The Colony". I have a friend who moved there a couple of years ago. I had to bring her home one day after she had a "proceedure" and was all bandaged up. When we got to the gate the guard asked me who I was going to see. Just joking arounds, I told him I was there to pick up my children at Paul Hewson's house (Bono). He looked at my CAR, then at me and let me right in! No call, no writting down the licence plate, no ID check, no DNA testing. My friend was shocked as she thought that the security was a lot tighter. Drive up in a very nice car and you just might wiz by. You never know. We were laughing so hard I almost ran over Johnny Carson, well it might have been him.

(bummed because I don't know anyone cool and famous....sigh)
