Is a rental car necessary???
My wife-to-be and I will be honeymooning in Athens for a week and London the second week, we are now planning on the arraingments for athens. wondering if we should rent a car or just rely on public transportation and taxis, etc to take us on short 'daytrips' outside of athens? inside the city we will use taxis, and our feet!

so is it more worthwhile, affordable, relaxing to rent a car as to rely on public trans?? I've found a few good quotes for rentals, less than $300 USD for a week so if people say don't get a car, I'm sure we could find somewhere to spend the $300!

thanks
driving in athens is a BIG hassle & very stressful.

going on daytrips (eg to Cape Sounion, or even Delphi) is best done with an organized tour bus, or a hired taxi/guide.

otherwise you're going to be all stressed from the athens traffic - no way to start out a honeymoon.

if you were leaving athens to tour for a few days, then Yes, a car rental would be worth it.

I've driven all over England and Scotland, but wouldn't rent a car in London.

Traffic is awful and the streets are packed, narrow and they drive on the wrong side of the road...that's Ok in the country where you have time to get it right, but in the city, no way!

Besides the underground is reasonably priced and goes just about anywhere you want to go. And you can take daytrips to Bath, Cambridge, York etal by train.

No car, no way!

I'm Greek-American and lived in Athens for 2 years. The driving there gave me an ulcer. If you do not know your way around the city do not attempt it.
You can hire a cab driver at a fixed rate and the buses are much more modern comfy than they used to be
